Agriculture and geothermal energy

Malménergie Naturelle announces the start of drilling in Yverdon-les-Bains in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. This geothermal project will extract hot water at a depth of about 1100 meters. The objective is to be able to heat the greenhouses of the company Stoll frères SA without CO2 emissions.

The family company Stoll Frères SA has been producing vegetables since 1982. It is one of the most important market garden companies in Switzerland. For several years, the company had been looking to reduce its CO2 emissions during production.

The Malménergie Naturelle well exploits the Middle Malm aquifer with an injection well and a production well. The thermal baths of Yverdon-les-Bains have been using it for several years to heat their facilities. The water will have a flow rate of about 70 liters per second and can be used without a heat pump.

A favourable site

The Montagny 2 well, rests from the drilling platform. This is the reinjection well through which the water returns to the aquifer after its calories have been used. The entrance to the aquifer is located at approximately 975 meters.

Various measures will take place during the Natural Malménergie project. These data will allow the optimization of the drilling of the Montagny 1 production well. In addition, it will also start from the drilling platform.

Drilling is expected to be completed in February 2023. Thus, the commissioning will take place during 2023. Finally, the Malménergie Naturelle project requires an investment of 17.5 million CHF.
