Soluna Holdings Inc., a US-based developer of data centres for intensive computing applications, announced it has surpassed the one gigawatt (GW) threshold for its clean computing projects, including operational, under-construction, and development-phase facilities. This milestone was achieved with the launch of two new energy installations in Texas, reinforcing the group’s position in renewable-powered data infrastructure.
A dual project combining solar and wind energy
The first site, named Project Fei, is a 100-megawatt (MW) data centre located in northern Texas, co-located with a 240 MW solar power plant. It is Soluna’s second solar project, developed in partnership with a global energy infrastructure investment firm. The site aims to harness excess solar energy and convert it into high-performance computing power. The project is advancing through land acquisition, power contract negotiations, and interconnection planning with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).
The second site, Project Gladys, is a 150 MW facility co-located with a 226 MW wind farm in southeastern Texas. This project is being developed with an Independent Power Producer (IPP) operating more than 80 energy facilities across the United States, with a portfolio exceeding $40bn. It is currently moving through similar stages of land agreements, power contracts, and ERCOT network integration planning.
A 2.8 GW project pipeline underway
With these two developments, Soluna states it has reached a pivotal stage in its expansion strategy. According to John Belizaire, Chief Executive Officer of Soluna, the group is now positioned on a similar level to major tech companies in terms of renewable-powered computing capacity, citing Amazon, Meta, and Google as benchmarks.
The company reports that its total project pipeline now exceeds 2.8 GW in potential capacity, including developments at various stages. It plans to announce new partnerships and project extensions in the coming months. Its operating model is based on flexible data centres that leverage the intermittency of renewable energy to perform computing tasks related to artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency mining.
The company is currently focusing its efforts on finalising Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), land agreements, and ERCOT planning for Projects Gladys and Fei, all required steps before moving into construction.
