Energy company Clearway Energy Group, together with Clearway Energy, Inc., has completed the acquisition of the Tuolumne wind project located in Klickitat County, southern Washington State. The facility has an installed capacity of 137 megawatts (MW) and is fully operational, generating enough electricity annually to supply more than 44,000 homes. The site lies along the Columbia River, a region known as one of the most favourable wind resource zones in the western United States.
Power supply agreement and public partnership
The electricity generated by the Tuolumne project will be sold under a revised agreement with the Turlock Irrigation District, originally set for a 15-year term. The contract also includes an option for repowering, allowing the potential extension of the site’s operational lifespan through the upgrade of existing turbine components. The transaction aligns with Clearway’s broader strategy to optimise its asset base in the western United States.
According to Clearway, the acquisition represents a $60mn investment, adding to its existing infrastructure in Washington State, including the 160 MW Rattlesnake Flat wind farm located in Adams County.
Local tax impact and regional development
Beyond its energy contribution, the project will have a local economic impact through an estimated $1.3mn in annual tax payments to Klickitat County. These funds will support public services including schools and hospitals. This fiscal contribution complements the commercial revenues generated by the site’s operation.
John Woody, Senior Vice President of Development at Clearway Energy Group, stated that the acquisition “reinforces Clearway’s long-term commitment in the State of Washington.” No major structural modifications to the site are currently planned, though the repowering option remains available depending on market conditions.
Strategic expansion on the West Coast
Clearway Energy Group, which develops, owns, and operates renewable energy assets across the United States, continues its targeted acquisition strategy focused on profitable and operational sites. The selection of the Tuolumne site is based on its strong performance history, reliable grid access, and location in a high-yield wind zone.
With this latest acquisition, the company reinforces its position on the West Coast, where demand for stable and low-cost electricity remains high, particularly in the residential sector and among regional utilities.
