JA Solar, a Chinese manufacturer of photovoltaic modules, has signed a supply contract with Indian engineering firm Larsen & Toubro for the Samarkand 1 and 2 solar projects in Uzbekistan. With a combined capacity of 1.2 gigawatts (GW), these two plants rank among the largest solar energy developments currently underway in the country.
A structuring partnership for the Uzbek market
The power plants will be located near the city of Samarkand, in the central region of the country. They are being developed by Saudi electricity producer ACWA Power. JA Solar will deliver all the photovoltaic modules for the two projects, which are scheduled to be commissioned in the coming months. This contract reinforces JA Solar’s position as a strategic supplier for large-scale projects in Central Asia.
Larsen & Toubro, acting as Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor, will oversee all construction works. The collaboration between ACWA Power, L&T and JA Solar aims to ensure technical compliance and bankability—two key criteria for international financial institutions.
Expected technical and economic impact
The plants are expected to produce enough electricity to meet the needs of several hundred thousand Uzbek households. They will also contribute to national grid stability and the modernisation of regional energy infrastructure. The modules supplied by JA Solar are designed to withstand diverse climate conditions and optimise energy output.
The agreement also includes rigorous technical monitoring and a commitment to delivery timelines. These projects form part of Uzbekistan’s national energy strategy, which targets 25% of electricity generation from renewables by 2030. The development of these power plants represents an industrial and economic lever in a region undergoing rapid energy transition.
