Axpo commissions 200 MWp solar complex in northern Spain
Swiss group Axpo has completed a four-plant photovoltaic complex in León province, totalling 200 MWp of capacity, and is preparing its grid connection for early 2026.

Axpo has completed construction of the Vilecha solar complex, a large-scale project located in Spain’s León province. Spanning the municipalities of Villadangos del Páramo and Cimanes de Tejar, the site includes four photovoltaic plants of 50 megawatts-peak (MWp) each, bringing total installed capacity to 200 MWp. The group expects the plants to be connected to the national grid by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
An industrial-scale site across 360 hectares
The complex includes the Valtarafon, Roteles, El Monte and La Fenera solar plants, covering over 360 hectares. Approximately 365,000 solar panels have been installed on tracking systems to optimise energy capture throughout the day. Technical forecasts indicate that the site will generate more than 377,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) annually.
Construction involved over 600 workers, 70% of whom were employed by local companies. Nearly half of the land used belongs to public entities, generating rental income that will be paid directly to local municipalities.
Technical coordination across multiple units
The project required centralised technical management, with simultaneous design of the four plants despite varying terrain conditions. All units are connected to a single 132-kilovolt (kV) substation, requiring rigorous planning in terms of grid connection and electrical engineering. Construction was completed on schedule despite the complexity of the infrastructure.
Axpo selected land with low agricultural and ecological value to minimise land use conflicts. An environmental management programme was included in the project, covering biodiversity monitoring, revegetation using native species, and waste handling in line with circular economy principles.
Axpo expands deployment in Spain
The Vilecha complex represents a strategic step for Axpo in the Spanish solar market. The group is currently developing two additional projects in the country, in La Muela (13.5 MWp) in Zaragoza province and Almod (32.5 MWp) in Córdoba province. These initiatives follow the same technical standards as Vilecha.
Active in several European markets, Axpo is steadily strengthening its position in large-scale renewable energy infrastructure. Projects of this nature allow the company to contribute to the continued expansion of the European photovoltaic landscape.
