International offshore wind developer Deep Wind Offshore and Ellevio, one of Sweden’s largest energy companies, have announced a long-term strategic partnership. The aim of this collaboration is to connect offshore wind power to the electricity grid, strengthening their respective positions in the Swedish energy market.

A partnership to strengthen the market

The partnership between Deep Wind Offshore and Ellevio combines the former’s global offshore wind expertise with the latter’s role as a power grid owner and operator. Together, they plan to develop and operate projects that will not only transform the Swedish energy landscape, but also offer significant growth opportunities. This collaboration explores new models for onshore and offshore networks, offering innovative solutions to meet the growing energy demands of industrial customers.

The flagship project: Olof Skötkonung

The main project of this collaboration is Olof Skötkonung, an offshore wind farm located in the Gulf of Bothnia, 53 kilometers northeast of Gävle. The wind farm will comprise 70 turbines capable of generating up to 7.5 TWh per year, meeting a significant proportion of the region’s electricity needs. Knut Vassbotn, CEO of Deep Wind Offshore, emphasizes the importance of this project in boosting energy production capacity as early as the 2030s, stressing the speed of delivery made possible by the partnership with Ellevio.

Accelerate sales development

For Ellevio, this project is part of a business model focused on the development and ownership of offshore wind networks. The ambition is to enable the connection of large quantities of wind power in Sweden, thus contributing to a rapid transition of the energy market. Kristofer Fröjd, Head of Strategy and Business Development at Ellevio, underlines the growing importance of offshore wind power in the Swedish energy mix and expresses his enthusiasm for the Olof Skötkonung project.

Considerable market potential

Deep Wind Offshore is developing projects in several countries and sees particular potential in Sweden, due to exceptional wind resources, a growing need for renewable energy, and an effective regulatory system that supports the establishment of new energy production. Knut Vassbotn highlights the combined skills of Norway and Sweden, with Norwegian offshore expertise and strong Swedish industrial competence, as well as a well-developed power grid.
This collaboration between Deep Wind Offshore and Ellevio represents a significant growth opportunity for both companies, enabling them to strengthen their positions in the Swedish energy market and meet tomorrow’s energy challenges with innovative, efficient solutions.
