The GK Happo Nioshiro Offshore Wind consortium, comprising the Japanese subsidiary ofIberdrola (Iberdrola Renewables Japan), Japan Renewable Energy and Tohoku Electric Power, was appointed by Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. This selection marks the start of the implementation of a large-scale offshore wind project with fixed turbines on monopile foundations.

Project technical details

The project involves the installation of 25 offshore wind turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW, off the coast of the towns of Happo and Noshiro in Akita prefecture. Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas will supply the units required for this major energy development.

Community and environmental commitment

The consortium is committed to fostering regional prosperity by working closely with local stakeholders, and contributes to Japan’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This initiative aims to provide a clean, stable source of energy for future generations through the power of offshore wind.

Project schedule and impact

Construction of the wind farm is scheduled to start in 2026, with commissioning expected in 2029. Over a 30-year period of exclusive occupation, the project will support the regional growth and development of Japan’s offshore wind industry, including the establishment of a local supply chain. In addition, Bank of Akita will work with local companies to implement regional development measures.

The Japanese government’s approval of the offshore wind project, led by the GK Happo Nioshiro Offshore Wind consortium, represents a significant step towards achieving Japan’s carbon-neutral ambitions. The project is expected to play a role both in transforming Japan’s energy landscape, and in stimulating the local economy and supply chain in the renewable energy sector.
