Sunsure Energy has announced the commissioning of an open-access solar power plant with a capacity of 82.5 megawatt-peak (MWp) in Erach, Jhansi district, Uttar Pradesh. This project marks the company’s tenth site in the region, consolidating its industrial presence and bringing its operational capacity in the state close to 300 MW.

A production network for industrial sectors

Sunsure’s solar plants are located across key districts including Agra, Banda, Mahoba, Jhansi and Chitrakoot. They supply electricity to industrial clients in sectors such as consumer goods, ceramics, metals and chemicals. The Jhansi plant is expected to produce around 128 mn units of electricity annually. This output will supply companies such as Haldiram’s, APL Apollo and a major national data centre.

Target of 500 MW by fiscal year 2025-2026

The developer aims to reach an installed capacity of 500 MW in Uttar Pradesh by the end of fiscal year 2025-2026. The company launched its first plant in the state in 2021 with a 15 MW facility in Pailani. Over four years, Sunsure Energy has increased its local solar output twentyfold, driven by growing industrial demand and the state’s energy policy.

An incentive framework for private producers

The Uttar Pradesh Solar Energy Policy, updated in 2022, introduced several measures favourable to independent power producers, including exemptions on transmission, distribution and electricity duties. These provisions have enabled operators like Sunsure to invest in large-scale projects, including hybrid solar and storage facilities.

Expansion into storage solutions

Sunsure has secured a bid from NTPC to develop a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) of 125 MW / 500 MWh. This project will complement its solar portfolio with round-the-clock power supply capacity, particularly during peak hours. Nationally, Sunsure reports 600 MW of operational assets and 7.5 GW under development across Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Karnataka.
