The recent approval of the Dengie solar farm by Maldon District Council represents a significant step forward for BSR Energy’s energy projects in the UK. The park, located near the village of Dengie in the district of Maldon, Essex, will occupy 33 hectares and generate 19 MW of renewable energy, enough to power 4,751 homes. The approval process was arduous. The first application, submitted in April 2023, was rejected on the grounds of flood risk and environmental impact. However, BSR Energy responded by revising its plan and submitting a new application in January 2024. Modifications included relocation of the distribution network substation and battery storage units, as well as a sequential flood risk test demonstrating the absence of more suitable land with lower risk.

Mitigation strategy and adjustments

To minimize the impact on local wildlife, BSR Energy has implemented a mitigation strategy for farmland birds and a habitat regulations assessment. With the Board’s approval, construction of the solar park is due to start in early 2025, with commissioning scheduled within six months. Carla Hardaker, Development Director at BSR Energy, said:

“We’re delighted to have secured planning permission; Dengie’s solar farm will help Maldon Council meet its energy targets.”

Economic impact

The approval of this project demonstrates Maldon Council’s commitment to supporting energy initiatives. The Dengie solar park will create local jobs during the construction phase and provide economic opportunities for local businesses. In the long term, it will help stabilize energy costs for residents. BSR Energy’s collaboration with local authorities underlines the importance of effective partnerships in the delivery of infrastructure projects. This cooperation is essential if we are to overcome the challenges of the energy transition and promote sustainable economic development.
The Dengie solar park represents a development model where technology and economic opportunity coexist. By integrating solutions to minimize ecological impacts and adapting to regulatory requirements, BSR Energy shows how energy projects can evolve to meet contemporary challenges.
The approval of the Dengie solar park is a crucial step towards achieving the district of Maldon’s energy objectives. This project exemplifies the efforts needed to achieve stable energy production and provides a framework for future energy projects.
