US-based electric vehicle battery system manufacturer Octillion has completed the solar conversion of its Pune facility in India. This site becomes the company’s first to operate entirely on internally generated photovoltaic power, estimated at 545MWh annually, covering the plant’s full energy requirements.

A first step in a national rollout plan

The factory, covering 8,200 square metres, is dedicated to manufacturing batteries for India’s electric vehicle market. Commissioned in June 2023, the facility began its energy transition in June 2024 and reached full solar-powered status by July 2025. The transformation took thirteen months, enabling the facility to operate exclusively on its own solar network.

The plant produces 3GWh of battery capacity annually, meeting the growing demand of India’s automotive sector. This project forms part of Octillion’s broader initiative to convert its two other manufacturing sites in India—also in Pune and in the state of Gujarat—to solar energy.

Multi-site energy coverage targeted by 2027

Octillion aims to fully transition its India operations to solar-based energy autonomy by 2027. The Pune plant will serve as a model for the remaining facilities, although no specific conversion timeline has been disclosed for the others.

The strategy is based on a localised industrial presence paired with a domestic supply chain built over the past ten years. This network enables the company to respond effectively to local market needs in terms of production volume and economic competitiveness.

Industrial adaptation to India’s energy context

By installing an integrated solar infrastructure at its production site, Octillion reduces reliance on the national grid while securing manufacturing capacity. This move aims to enhance operational stability amid energy distribution challenges in some of India’s industrial regions.

The Pune site thus serves as a pilot platform for a broader energy model to be deployed at scale. This development comes at a time of rapid expansion in India’s electric vehicle market, where demand for critical components such as batteries continues to rise significantly.
