In Germany, coal-fired power generation volumes rose by 35.6% between January and June 2021.
The cause?
Weather conditions preventing the production of healthy electricity from renewable sources.

Germany Green energy shortage for the first half of 2021

This sharp increase in the use of coal is due, on the one hand, to the cold weather in the first half of the year.
Secondly, the drop in wind power supply.
As a result, while coal is deliberately kept out of the electricity supply, poor weather conditions require its use.
In particular, to meet mobility needs.
In concrete terms, this translates into an 8.1% drop inrenewable energy production in the first half of 2021.
At the same time, conventional energy production increased by 19.7% year-on-year.
“Hard coal has made a significant contribution to security of supply and underlined its important role in supporting the energy transition,” says importer group VDKi.

Important election to come

This issue is of central importance in view of the general elections to be held in Germany in September 2021.
The debate focuses on the need to reconcile security of supply with the affordability of energy, particularly renewable energy.
Energy industry leaders are calling for a coherent and realistic strategy to combat the acceleration of global warming.
