Biedronka, selects EDP Energia Polska to install solar panels on nine of its distribution centers. This initiative aims to supply around 16% of the daily energy needs of these centers through a combined capacity of over 7MWp. This renewable energy production, estimated at 7.5GWh per year, could supply more than 3,000 homes in the regions concerned. This collaboration marks a significant step towards reducing Biedronka’s ecological footprint, helping to avoid the emission of 5,000 tonnes of CO2 every year. These efforts are equivalent to the capture of carbon dioxide by almost 900,000 trees.

EDP, leader in decentralized solar energy

Present in Poland since 2007 with the development of wind power projects, EDP strengthened its position in the Polish renewable energy market with the creation of EDP Energia Polska in 2020. In 2022, EDP consolidated its presence by acquiring Soon Energy Poland and Zielona-Energia.com, reaching over 150MWp of solar contracts with local companies. EDP Renewables, a division of EDP, also develops large-scale solar projects. The company creates hybrid projects combining wind and solar power.

Impact and prospects of the energy transition

EDP’s initiatives in Poland are part of an overall investment plan of 2.5 billion euros by 2026 to install a further 4GWp of solar projects. By focusing on decentralized solar power generation, EDP is responding to growing demand and helping to reduce carbon emissions on a significant scale. The rapid growth of this segment should account for around 50% of new solar capacity worldwide in the next few years.
