Nexans announces the execution of a contract with Empire Wind for the export of wind energy to New York.

An ambitious contract

Nexans announces the execution of phase 1 of its contract with Equinor and BP. The project, called Epirus Wind, is located in the United States and is a large offshore wind farm. As a result, it will be able to generate electricity for more than one million homes in New York State.

The negotiation of this contract has been going on since March 2021. It is the result of collaborative work on the design, manufacture, installation and protection of export cables. The contract states that the cables will be sourced from Nexans’ facilities in Charleston, South Carolina and Halden, Norway.

New York State bets on wind power

Nexans’ export cables will supply more than 500,000 households with a connection to Empire Wind. Empire Wind’s offshore wind farm produces 2.1GW. Christophe Guérin, Nexans’ CEO, says:

“New York is one of the most aggressive states in the U.S. in its commitment to create a fully carbon-free economy statewide. Offshore wind will likely be the state’s primary source of electricity by 2035. The signing of the contract for Empire Wind makes Nexans a major player in the U.S. renewable energy sector. This signing will also alleviate additional pressure on the state’s power grids. We look forward to continuing to work together with Equinor in the future.”

The wind farm is located approximately 20 to 33 km south of Long Island and east of the Rockaways. Equinor’s Empire Wind project anticipates the state’s growing need for energy. Finally, it contributes to its carbon reduction roadmap.
