Swedish ocean energy technology developer Minesto was included this week in an official delegation led by Sweden to South Korea, as part of the Focus Asia strategy aimed at strengthening trade relations with the region. The mission’s primary objective was to identify new partnership opportunities and promote Sweden’s technological capabilities in key sectors of the energy transition.
Minesto, represented by its Chief Executive Officer Dr Martin Edlund, participated in the bilateral summit titled “Sweden–South Korea Sustainable Partnership Summit” held on October 16. The event brought together government leaders from both countries and major corporate representatives. Minesto’s interest in the South Korean market is driven by the country’s considerable potential in tidal and ocean current resources.
Technological cooperation focused on ocean energy
South Korea’s coastline offers favourable conditions for the development of tidal energy projects, making it a strategic target for Minesto’s technology. The company aims to integrate into the local industrial landscape by identifying commercial partners and suitable sites for its installations. Discussions allowed Dr Edlund to present the group’s technological advances, particularly in electricity generation from low-flow tidal currents.
Alongside Minesto, the Swedish delegation included industrial companies such as Ericsson, Hexicon, Atlas Copco, Hitachi Energy, Tetra Pak, EQT Group and Saab. This mobilisation reflects the coordinated effort between public and private sectors to position Sweden as a key partner in energy development.
Bilateral dialogue supported by institutions
The mission was organised by Business Sweden in cooperation with the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing. The presence of Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel added diplomatic visibility to the visit, enhancing the exposure of Swedish companies expanding internationally.
The focus on renewable energy technologies helped to highlight the potential of bilateral cooperation in this strategic sector. According to statements made at the summit, South Korea plans to increase its capacity from alternative sources, creating future opportunities for international players like Minesto.
