Japan: a forecast of solar performance

In Japan, JERA and JDSC announce to jointly develop and operate a system to predict solar energy production.

In Japan, JERA and JDSC announce to jointly develop and operate a system to predict solar energy production.

A specific objective

In Japan, JERA and the JDSC (Japan Data Science Consortium) are working on weather forecasting. Both partners are also looking to include power generation performance. Thus, the objective is to develop an accurate system to make predictions about solar energy.

Solar power generation appears to be a promising near-term option for expanding the adoption of renewable energy in Japan. Indeed, the established technology is quick to build. This approach is part of the process of achieving a low-carbon society by 2050.

State-of-the-art technology

JERA and JDSC are jointly developing a system to predict the amount of electricity generated by solar energy based on weather forecast data. The two partners are beginning to operate this system in conjunction with the start of operations at JERA‘s solar power generation facilities. Thus, due to the variation in weather conditions, the measurements taken will balance supply and demand.

The system is operational in a serverless configuration and benefits from the automation of operating tasks. For example, in Japan, JERA and JDSC will further improve forecast accuracy by applying JDSC’s expertise. Indeed, JDSC has expertise in advanced machine learning to the data collected on the amount of electricity generated.
