The German group ENERTRAG has signed an acquisition agreement for an industrial site in Prenzlau to host a new green hydrogen production facility. This project, with an electrical capacity of 130 megawatts, aims for annual production of up to 12,500 tonnes of hydrogen from renewable electricity, mainly destined for heavy industry, including the steel, cement, glass, and fertiliser sectors, as well as mobility.
A structuring project for industry and infrastructure
The site will be connected to the FLOW pipeline network, a key link in the German hydrogen network, ensuring distribution to industrial clients across the country. Several trailer filling stations will also be installed to guarantee flexibility in hydrogen delivery. The project is part of the European Hy2Infra funding programme, which promotes the development of hydrogen infrastructure across the continent.
The announced investment, estimated at around €300 mn ($325 mn), will enable the reuse of an existing industrial hall, thus reducing the need for new construction and enhancing the local industrial heritage. The works are also expected to create up to 25 direct jobs and generate additional tax revenue for the local community. The city of Prenzlau and its businesses are set to benefit from renewed economic momentum, supported by competitive energy and secure hydrogen supply.
Local synergies and economic impact
Municipal authorities are currently examining the integration of waste heat generated by the unit into the urban district heating network, to provide a stable and potentially more affordable heat source for the community. The planned future connection of the Prenzlau Nord industrial area to the central hydrogen network represents an attractive factor for the establishment of new industrial companies, while strengthening the competitiveness of existing firms in the area.
The city’s mayor, Hendrik Sommer, pointed out that ENERTRAG’s expansion in Prenzlau will go hand in hand with the development of innovative projects likely to have positive effects for the city and the region. According to ENERTRAG’s management, securing this site anchors industrial green hydrogen production close to renewable energy sources, while emphasising cooperation between industry and public stakeholders.
Next steps and outlook for hydrogen
The project is currently in the technical planning phase, with authorisation documents due to be submitted shortly. Water requirements will be fully covered by existing quotas, with no impact on the region’s drinking water supply, according to the company and city services. ENERTRAG aims to establish an industrial cluster around green hydrogen, further strengthening Uckermark’s position as a reference territory in the industrial energy transition.
Matthias König, ENERTRAG representative, states that “securing the site creates the necessary conditions for industrial green hydrogen production at the very source of renewable electricity”. Partnership between municipal and industrial stakeholders remains central to the project’s success, marking an important milestone in the transformation of the local industrial fabric.
