CNOOC Limited has officially commenced production at the Dongfang 1-1 Gas Field 13-3 Block site in the Yinggehai Basin, located offshore at an average depth of 67 metres. This is the first offshore gas project in China to combine high temperature, high pressure, and low permeability conditions, requiring advanced extraction technologies. The development is based on a new unmanned wellhead platform, illustrating the shift towards automated solutions and operational risk control.
Investment in gas infrastructure integration
The project relies on the existing facilities of the Dongfang gas field, enabling optimised investment and reduced commissioning times. Six development wells are planned to support production, targeting 35 million cubic feet of natural gas per day by 2026. This integration aims to improve the profitability of the field and meet the growing demand in the region.
The operational connection between Dongfang 1-1 and Dongfang 13-2 creates an integrated offshore production network in the Yinggehai Basin. This architecture strengthens the resilience of the natural gas supply and improves logistical management, while supporting investments in the Chinese gas sector.
Impact on regional supply and investment dynamics
The consolidation of these infrastructures is intended to support the supply of natural gas for the provinces of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Hainan. The use of existing processing equipment optimises investment allocation and facilitates the delivery of gas to regional markets, reducing the need for new facilities.
The Dongfang 1-1 13-3 project represents a significant development in CNOOC Limited’s corporate investment strategy, while contributing to the energy reliability of southern China. The completion of this stage highlights the importance of planning and asset management in the development of the offshore gas sector.
