Mozambique has shown increasing interest in diversifying its partners in the natural resources sector, particularly in the extraction and production of natural gas. In a recent statement, Foreign Minister Maria Manuela dos Santos Lucas indicated that concrete steps are being taken to encourage the entry of Russian companies specialising in the oil and gas industry.
Northern Mozambique targeted for new investments
The Mozambican government is paying particular attention to natural gas fields located in Cabo Delgado Province, a region identified as strategic for the country’s energy development. According to Maria Manuela dos Santos Lucas, several foreign companies, including firms from the United States, Italy, France, and South Korea, have also positioned themselves in this rapidly growing market. The Minister indicated that support has been requested to enable major Russian companies in the sector to access these investment opportunities.
Mozambique has highlighted its objective to create a favourable environment for the arrival of new international players, taking into account the interest shown by Russian groups in local gas projects. The hydrocarbons sector is considered a cornerstone of national economic development, with the aim of increasing production for export.
A region under security strain
Cabo Delgado Province remains marked by a complex security situation. The Foreign Minister pointed out that the region continues to face a persistent terrorist threat, although measures are currently underway to restore a more stable climate. This security situation does not prevent Mozambique from pursuing its policy of openness to international investment, while calling for vigilance and cooperation in the field of security.
Several international energy companies are currently studying the conditions for entry into this market, seeking to assess economic prospects in a still fragile local context. Discussions with new partners could influence the balance of the gas sector in the region.
Minister Maria Manuela dos Santos Lucas stated that Mozambique’s priorities remain increasing production, improving security and attracting foreign investment, saying: “We have sought support to facilitate the entry of major companies into our market.”
