Norwegian company Hystar AS has announced the signing of a second contract in South Korea, this time with Sunbo Unitech, to supply proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser stacks. These units will be integrated into Sunbo Unitech’s Balance of Plant (BOP) system for a project located in Boryeong. Upon final commissioning, the complete system will be handed over to the Shin Boryeong power station operated by Korea Midland Power (KOMIPO).

KOMIPO, one of the leading electricity producers in South Korea, will use the hydrogen generated by the system to refuel fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), including buses operating in the region. This project reflects the country’s industrial push towards diversifying energy sources through green hydrogen.

An industrial partnership with Sunbo Unitech

The agreement with Sunbo Unitech confirms Hystar’s commitment to positioning itself as a key supplier of solutions for hydrogen system integrators. The delivery of PEM stacks demonstrates the adaptability of Hystar’s technology to local installations and integrated value chains. Module integration into Sunbo’s systems is scheduled in the coming months, although the delivery timeline has not been disclosed.

Fredrik Mowill, Chief Executive Officer of Hystar, stated: “We are pleased to close another contract in South Korea. We look forward to working with Sunbo to successfully deploy our electrolyser stacks in their Boryeong project.”

Growing presence in the Asian market

This contract follows a series of developments for Hystar, including a recent $36mn funding round and a €26mn ($28mn) grant from the European Union Innovation Fund. These resources will enable Hystar to strengthen its presence in international markets, particularly in Asia, where demand for hydrogen infrastructure continues to rise.
