A giant step forward in renewable energy production has been taken with the operationalization of a 10MW community solar project. This unique project, developed by CEP Renewables in partnership with Luminace, is distinguished by its location on a former landfill site, now converted into a clean, cost-effective energy source.
Economic and social benefits of the project
The facility, part of the state’s Community Solar Energy Pilot Program, features a dual solar installation of 5MW each, spread across two utility territories. This project enabled the municipality to recover some $2 million in unpaid taxes and interest, demonstrating the direct economic benefits of such projects. What’s more, the majority of the thousands of homes supplied by this project belong to low- and moderate-income households, reinforcing the commitment to energy equity.
Innovative technologies used
Using Terrasmart’s ballasted solar racking technology and bifacial solar panels, this project marks a milestone in the use of limited-use sites for renewable energy generation.
Strategic Partnerships and Corporate Roles
CEP Renewables, which developed the project, collaborated with CS Energy as EPC contractor during the construction phase. Luminace, a subsidiary of Brookfield Renewable, will act as the long-term owner and operator of the project.
In addition to transforming a closed landfill site into a revenue-generating asset, the BEMS project is also helping to keep New Jersey at the top of the U.S. in terms of installed solar capacity per square mile and planned community solar capacity for low- and middle-income households. This project adds more than 100MW of solar projects developed by CEP in the state, supporting the state’s goal of achieving 100% clean electricity by 2035.
This groundbreaking project is a perfect example of how the conversion of underutilized sites can generate significant economic and ecological benefits. It is part of a broader effort to promote clean energy and build community resilience, while contributing to New Jersey’s ambitious clean energy goals.
