Nordex Electrolyzers, a joint venture between the Government of Navarra and Nordex Group, recently presented its prototype 500 kW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer. This prototype, designed, manufactured and assembled entirely in Spain, was revealed at the inauguration of the test plant in Lumbier (Navarra). The event was attended by key figures including María Chivite, President of the Government of Navarra, and José Luis Blanco, CEO of Nordex Group.

Prototype background and development

The 500 kW electrolyzer is designed to produce over 10 kg/h of hydrogen with an energy consumption of less than 50 kWh/kg. Its design makes it possible to manage power variations and frequent shutdowns, thanks to optimal material selection. Nordex Electrolyzers, backed by the Nordex Group’s experience as a wind turbine manufacturer, benefits from competitive synergies to become a world leader in electrolyzers. Nordex Electrolyzers CEO Luis Solla said:

“This prototype is part of our business development plan, aiming to finalize the design of our megawatt-scale series product by 2026.”

The 50 kW prototype, in operation since 2023, is currently being tested in Puertollano (Ciudad Real) and is showing promising results in terms of efficiency and flexibility.

Impact and prospects for industry

María Chivite stressed the importance of this prototype for the region and Spain, in line with the Navarra government’s strategic priorities for the development of renewable energies and green hydrogen. She pointed out that Navarra is a pioneering region in renewable energies, and this leadership continues thanks to public-private partnerships. The Minister of Industry, Mikel Irujo, added that the financial support of Sodena, shareholder in Nordex Electrolyzers, has been decisive in the realization of strategic and pioneering projects such as this. The production of green hydrogen using electrolyzers is a key technology for achieving these objectives, positioning Nordex Electrolyzers as a major player in the energy transition.

Growth prospects and financing

Nordex Electrolyzers, created in 2022, aims to design and manufacture pressurized alkaline electrolyzers. Currently in a growth phase, the company employs 26 people and plans to expand its team in line with technological advances. The electrolyser development plan is partly funded by the European Commission, with support of €12 million under the IPCEI Hy2Tech program.
The company plans to finalize the design of its megawatt-scale mass-produced product by 2026. This development will enable Nordex Electrolyzers to strengthen its global market position and seize new business opportunities in the hydrogen sector.
