Bord Gáis Energy, in partnership with Corio Generation, a global offshore wind farm developer, is committed to entering the offshore wind market in Ireland. The collaboration aims to developIreland’s huge offshore wind potential, boosting energy security and contributing to the country’s climate objectives.

Sceirde Rocks wind farm development

Corio Generation is currently developing the 450 MW Sceirde Rocks wind farm off the west coast of Ireland. This project is in line with the government’s strategy to maximize the economic impact of renewable energies and guarantee a secure and balanced regional energy supply.

Committed to greener energy

Dave Kirwan, Managing Director of Bord Gáis Energy, emphasizes the importance of this collaboration:

“We believe that all energy can be green and that this can improve Ireland’s energy security. This partnership with Corio combines our expertise in power generation, Centrica’s financial backing and Corio’s global experience in developing offshore wind projects.”

Jonathan Cole, CEO of Corio Generation, adds that:

“Ireland, with its vast coastline and abundant natural resources, is perfectly placed to develop its offshore wind capacity. This partnership will enable us to play a major role in Ireland’s energy transition.”

The Irish government’s ambitious targets

The Irish government has set itself the target of generating 80% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, including 5 GW from offshore wind. In March 2024, the Department of Energy, Climate and Communications publishedIreland ‘s first offshore wind industrial strategy, aimed at developing a robust supply chain to support wind projects in Ireland and overseas.

Long-term strategy for offshore wind power

In May 2024, two further documents were published: a futuristic framework outlining Ireland’s long-term approach to the growth of offshore wind generation, and a publication on potential development areas off Ireland’s south coast with a view to an auction planned for late 2024. Bord Gáis Energy and Corio will continue to evaluate emerging opportunities in the Irish offshore wind sector.
This strategic partnership between Bord Gáis Energy and Corio Generation marks a crucial step in the development of offshore wind power in Ireland. By combining expertise and resources, the two companies are well positioned to make a significant contribution to Ireland’s energy transition, while supporting the country’s ambitious climate targets.
