An evolving project

Barão São João,EDPR ‘s onshore wind farmsees completion the installation of the two most powerful wind turbines in the Iberian Peninsula. The site includes two Vestas EnVentus V162-6.2 MW wind turbines. Their 80-meter long blades will supply the Portuguese grid with more than 34GWh of renewable energy.

The wind farm will provide enough energy to cover the electricity needs of about 27,000 people. Initially, the project included 25 turbines of 2MW each. Thus, the park should have a total installed capacity of 50MW.

However, with the addition of two new Vestas wind turbines the capacity of Barão São João reaches 62MW. In addition, the transport of the 80-meter blades was the most complex ever carried out in the Iberian Peninsula. In addition, the site benefits from the connection to the network of existing infrastructures.

Two powerful wind turbines

By expanding existing wind farms, EDPR and Vestas are increasing the production of renewable energy. In addition, both companies seek to minimize the environmental and landscape impact. In this way, the company is helping to achieve the objective of accelerating the global energy transition.

With this project, Vestas has more than 900MW of capacity installed or under construction in Portugal. Thus, the company owns nearly 6GW in the Iberian Peninsula. In addition, the company also provides services to over 1 GW of wind turbines in Portugal.

The company’s presence in Portugal also includes the Vestas Porto technology center. This center is celebrating its fifth anniversary. With this center, the company aims to hire 80 professionals by the end of the year.
