Mitsubishi Power, a subsidiary of Japanese industrial conglomerate Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, announced it will supply equipment to an energy project in Vietnam aimed at converting an oil-fired thermal power plant into a natural gas-fuelled facility. The project concerns the O Mon 1 Thermal Power Plant, located in Can Tho, southern Vietnam.
Modernisation of power generation infrastructure
The O Mon 1 plant comprises two generating units with a capacity of 330 megawatts each. The conversion process includes upgrading existing equipment to allow the use of natural gas as the primary fuel source. This transition is intended to ensure the plant complies with stricter environmental regulations expected in the coming years. Mitsubishi Power did not disclose the estimated project cost or completion timeline.
Local partnership with a public entity
The conversion project is led by Power Generation Corporation 2, an entity under Vietnam Electricity Corporation Group, the state-owned enterprise responsible for most of Vietnam’s power generation and distribution. The initiative is part of a broader effort to diversify energy sources and modernise thermal facilities in response to growing power demand across the country.
Equipment supply for adjacent facility
In parallel with this contract, Mitsubishi Power is also involved in a neighbouring development: the O Mon 4 Thermal Power Plant. The Japanese company will supply two gas turbines for the facility, which will have a total capacity of 1,155 megawatts. The plant is currently under construction and is scheduled to begin operations in 2028.
