France: 6,700 panels to boost local production in Brittany

Lorient Agglomération and XSEA launch a solar power plant in Languidic with an annual capacity of 4.4 GWh, marking a significant step towards regional energy autonomy.

Lorient Agglomération, in collaboration with XSEA, commissions a new solar power plant on a former granite quarry in Languidic. The plant represents an investment of 3.6 million euros and comprises over 6,700 photovoltaic panels. It will produce a maximum annual output of 4 MWp, equivalent to the electricity consumption of 1,500 households.

Investment and profitability

The Languidic solar power plant was built in response to a call for tenders issued by the French Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE). XSEA secured the project with a guaranteed purchase price over 20 years, ensuring stable profitability despite competition from sunnier regions. Construction was entrusted to Omexom, a VINCI Energies subsidiary specializing in ground-mounted solar power plants.

Deployment and Outlook

Earthworks began in December 2023, followed by equipment installation from March to July 2024. Commissioning is scheduled for late summer. This project is part of Lorient Agglomération’s overall strategy to increase local production of electricity from renewable sources.
At the same time, XSEA has recently commissioned several other photovoltaic installations, notably on rooftops and shaded areas, thus diversifying the sources of renewable energy production in the region.

Capacity expansion

In 2023, Lorient Agglomération also inaugurated several new photovoltaic power plants on community facilities, doubling local photovoltaic electricity production in one year. Among these facilities, the Kermat solar farm stands out for its 25,000 m² of photovoltaic panels, producing around 6 GWh of electricity per year.
These initiatives are designed to meet the objectives of Lorient Agglomération’s climate-air-energy plan, which aims to cover 50% of its energy consumption by renewable energies by 2025.
The concerted efforts of Lorient Agglomération and XSEA illustrate a significant step forward in optimizing local resources and securing energy supplies. Diversification of projects and guaranteed long-term sales rates ensure economic stability and resilience in the face of energy market fluctuations.
