VSB France, an independent producer of renewable electricity, has announced the commissioning of its new ground-mounted photovoltaic plant, “Soleil de Balsac,” located in Druelle Balsac, Aveyron. This installation repurposes a former quarry to generate a capacity of 9.2 MWc, aligning with a strategy to optimize available resources for energy production.

Comprising 16,740 photovoltaic panels, the plant will produce 10,550 MWh annually, meeting the average energy needs of 5,000 households. This output was achieved through technological advancements that increased energy density without extending the initial site footprint.

Infrastructure optimization and technical advancements

Initially planned for a capacity of 5 MWc, the plant’s capacity was increased to 9.2 MWc through technical adjustments during development. This densification allowed the project to double its capabilities without impacting the utilized area. Such management showcases a practical example of maximizing existing infrastructure in a commercial framework.

According to Maël Lagarde, Managing Director of VSB France, “This project reflects our ability to adjust our developments based on technical opportunities, ensuring optimal yields.”

Management of local constraints

The implementation of the plant was carried out with consideration of several servitudes. Proximity to the Rodez-Marcillac aerodrome was factored into the design phase, particularly the orientation of the panels. Additionally, construction timelines were adjusted to comply with local regulatory requirements, minimizing impacts on surrounding activities.

Patrick Gayrard, Mayor of Druelle Balsac, stated, “This project represents a good use of an unused site. We have observed that the works were executed in line with commitments made to the community.”

Participation and financial implications

A crowdfunding initiative was proposed to local residents, fostering a regional connection to the project. This mechanism attracted significant interest, strengthening the project’s economic model while engaging local stakeholders in its development.

Furthermore, the project was showcased at the Forum EnerGaïa, an annual event that brings together key players in renewable energy. This platform emphasized VSB France’s role in the development of large-scale projects across the region.
