German energy group Uniper has signed a seven-year biomethane supply contract with Spanish developer Five Bioenergy. The agreement covers the purchase of biomethane from three facilities located in the Murcia region, considered among the largest in the country. Initial deliveries are expected at the beginning of 2027.
Expansion of low-carbon gas portfolio
This contract enables Uniper to expand its portfolio of renewable and low-carbon gases, in a context of diversifying energy sources across Europe. Biomethane, derived from organic matter, fits into the company’s strategy to ensure energy continuity while reducing emissions in the road and maritime sectors. The agreement forms part of Uniper’s efforts to secure the import of renewable gases, alongside its investments in hydrogen and its derivatives.
The partnership with Five Bioenergy, which develops large-scale industrial projects, also stabilises supply for Uniper while contributing to the strengthening of the biomethane value chain in Europe. Both companies aim to develop long-term technological and commercial synergies.
Regional expansion and market access
For Five Bioenergy, the agreement marks a key milestone in its development as a major biomethane player in Europe. The company expects the contracted volumes to reinforce the economic viability of its existing facilities and support investment in new production capacity. The contract with Uniper secures a stable market outlet for the produced biomethane, reducing exposure to market volatility.
Demand for biomethane continues to grow in several European countries, notably in Germany and France, supported by incentive policies and emissions reduction targets in the transport sector. By partnering with an industrial buyer like Uniper, Five Bioenergy secures a significant share of its future output while asserting its expansion strategy in European markets.
