RWE, the leading renewable energies company, takes a major step forward in its expansion in Iberia with the successful commissioning of its 46 MWac ground-mounted solar photovoltaic farm in Morgavel, Portugal. The plant is located south of Lisbon, in Morgavel, Sines, on a 112-hectare site.

The farm is equipped with almost 91,000 bifacial solar modules, designed to absorb sunlight at both the front and back of the module, maximizing energy conversion efficiency. Construction work on the solar power plant was carried out by Omexom Portugal, while Construção e Manutenção Eletromecânica (CME) managed the substation and grid connection work.

Committed to the energy transition

Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, expressed her pride at the commissioning of the Morgavel solar farm as RWE’s first installation in Portugal. The farm will help supply green electricity to around 42,000 Portuguese households, playing a key role in meeting local climate targets. It also further strengthens RWE’s presence in renewable energies on the Iberian peninsula and its global solar portfolio.

Over the past year, RWE has demonstrated its commitment to the energy transition in Iberia by commissioning three new solar farms with a total capacity of 98 MWac (Las Vaguadas, Casa Valdes and Puerta del Sol) in Spain. In addition, the 92 MWac Gazules project is currently under construction. In total, RWE has around 300 MWac of solar capacity, with six large-scale photovoltaic projects in operation and one under construction on the Iberian peninsula.

In addition to its solar capacity, RWE Renewables Iberia also has onshore wind farms with a total capacity of around 500 MW in operation, following the commissioning of the innovative Orkoien onshore project.

RWE: A world leader in renewable energies

As one of the world’s leading players in renewable energies, RWE operates photovoltaic power plants worldwide, including Limondale, one of Australia’s largest solar farms, with a capacity of 249 MWac. The company is also involved in the development of innovative solar projects, including a floating photovoltaic project on a lake in the Netherlands. In Germany, RWE operates and builds solar power plants with integrated energy storage systems in open-cast mines, while exploring new opportunities in agricultural photovoltaic power plants.

In conclusion, the successful commissioning of the Morgavel solar farm in Portugal marks a significant milestone in RWE’s ongoing expansion in renewable energies in Iberia. With growing solar capacity and a commitment to innovation, RWE is playing a key role in the region’s energy transition, contributing to a more sustainable future.
