French producer Lhyfe has obtained RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) certification for three additional sites in France and Germany, bringing the total number of certified facilities to four. These sites represent a combined capacity of 21 megawatts and a maximum output of 8.3 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per day.

A strategic European certification

The RFNBO certification is the European Union’s strictest standard under the RED III renewable energy directive. It guarantees that hydrogen is produced exclusively from renewable sources and complies with the criteria set out in the EU Green Taxonomy. Lhyfe thus becomes the largest RFNBO hydrogen producer by electrolysis in Europe, both in number of sites and installed capacity.

The first site to be certified in May 2025 was located in Bouin (1 MW), in the Pays de la Loire region. Three other facilities followed: Buléon (5 MW) in Brittany, Bessières (5 MW) in Occitanie, and Schwäbisch Gmünd (10 MW) in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The latter, the company’s largest, will be inaugurated in October 2025.

An extended logistics network across Europe

Lhyfe’s sites are designed to supply the bulk hydrogen market, supported by a fleet of nearly 70 mobile containers. This network allows direct distribution to clients across several European countries while optimising delivery distances. The company now operates one of the most extensive logistics networks for certified renewable hydrogen in Europe.

The RFNBO certification enables Lhyfe’s clients to benefit from traceability and sustainability guarantees. It also gives them access to public support mechanisms established under national and European frameworks. This regulatory compliance strengthens the appeal of RFNBO hydrogen for industrial groups, energy companies and transport operators seeking to align with new EU requirements.

Multiple outlets for bulk production

The volumes produced at the four certified sites supply various industrial and mobility sectors, as well as multiple demonstration projects in Europe. These applications include combustion, underground storage in salt caverns, hybrid boilers and construction machinery. Lhyfe is positioning itself as a supplier capable of meeting a wide range of renewable hydrogen needs at a continental scale.

Matthieu Guesné, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Lhyfe, stated that this certification marked “a key milestone,” validating the company’s industrial model and its ability to locally produce hydrogen that is traceable and compliant with European standards.
