Envision Energy, a Chinese company specialising in low-carbon energy technologies, has formalised a green ammonia offtake agreement with Marubeni Corporation, one of Japan’s five major trading conglomerates. The announcement, made on June 3, confirms the entry of both groups into a partnership shaping the emerging market for renewable-origin ammonia across the Asia-Pacific region.

The agreement secures a long-term commitment for the commercialisation and distribution of ammonia produced from green hydrogen, fully generated by renewable sources. It aligns with Marubeni’s industrial strategy to secure significant volumes of low-carbon energy for its operations in Asia. Envision Energy will contribute its expertise in alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis—two key technologies for producing hydrogen from green electricity.

Large-scale industrial production

The agreement is based on ammonia production within an integrated renewable energy and hydrogen production complex developed by Envision in China. The project, described as the world’s largest of its kind, combines wind, solar, and storage to directly power electrolysis and ammonia synthesis. The initial phase, launched in 2024, targets an annual capacity of 300,000 tonnes, with a final goal of 1.5 million tonnes per year.

This volume is expected to meet rising demand in the chemical industry, notably in fertilisers and transport, where ammonia is considered a potential alternative energy carrier to liquefied natural gas. The contract with Marubeni sets a commercial precedent, establishing market and delivery conditions that could serve as a benchmark for other players.

A strategic milestone for Asia

The signing of this agreement comes as Japan accelerates its investments in decarbonised energy. According to Envision Energy, the partnership will support Japan’s long-term energy goals while strengthening the country’s energy security. Green ammonia may be used in adapted thermal power plants or for zero-emission maritime transport.

Frank Yu, Senior Vice President of Envision Energy, stated that the deal represents “a turning point in the global commercialisation of ammonia as a carbon-neutral fuel,” though no financial details were disclosed. Marubeni has not publicly commented on the purchase volumes or logistical terms.

Commercial and technological prospects

This project is part of a broader series of initiatives by Envision to industrialise its green hydrogen technologies globally. The company is currently the only one to combine expertise in renewable energy, electrolysis, and the design of carbon-neutral industrial parks, according to its internal data.

In 2024, Envision Energy received the “Energy Transition Changemaker” award at COP28 and was named among the “Energy Innovators” by Fortune, though the company maintains its strategic focus on cost optimisation and supply continuity.
