Deriva Energy has brought its 100 MW Wildflower Solar plant online in DeSoto County, Mississippi. This project marks the company’s first venture into the state, strengthening its presence in the solar energy sector in the United States.
A strategic investment in Mississippi
John Clapp, CEO of Deriva Energy, emphasized the significance of the project for the company, stating, “We are pleased to launch Wildflower Solar into full commercial operation. This project aligns with our strategy of expanding in the Southeast United States, while providing local energy supply with clean, carbon-free power.” The plant is now generating electricity for the region, adding renewable production capacity to the local grid.
Economic benefits for the region
In addition to its environmental benefits, the Wildflower Solar plant generates economic advantages for the DeSoto County region. During the construction phase, the project employed nearly 300 local workers. Over the long term, it will continue to offer employment opportunities and contribute to the economic development of the area, strengthening the local tax base.
A partnership with Toyota Motor North America
The plant also provides renewable electricity to Toyota Motor North America under a power purchase agreement. This partnership is part of Toyota’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035. Becky Martin, sustainability manager at Toyota, stated, “The deployment of Wildflower Solar allows us to continue pursuing our goal of reducing our carbon footprint. Mississippi, where we manufacture the Corolla, is a key state for us, and this initiative contributes to increasing the share of renewable energy in our power grid.”
