Asia-based Alternō opens a subsidiary in Japan to industrialise its sand thermal batteries, targeting the agricultural and manufacturing sectors with two new renewable heat storage systems.

Technology company Alternō has announced the launch of Alternō Japan GK, a new entity based in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture. This strategic development aims to localise the manufacturing and research of its sand-based thermal batteries, designed to store high-temperature renewable heat. The facility will serve as a regional hub for product localisation, research, and prototyping, supported by the Ibaraki Startup Visa Programme and the Leave a Nest organisation.

Alternō is developing a system capable of storing renewable electricity as heat up to 600°C, using recyclable sand as the storage medium. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, this solution is non-toxic, fireproof and composed of locally sourced materials. The device specifically targets industrial sectors with high thermal energy demand while offering applications for agriculture, including greenhouse heating and food drying.

Two models tailored for the Japanese market

Two distinct systems will be offered locally. The first, Alternō Hybrid, combines electric power and biomass combustion to provide continuous heat in rural areas. This model allows the conversion of agricultural organic waste into energy, reducing both energy costs and emissions. The second, Alternō Mini, is a compact unit designed for small facilities, research centres, and demonstration projects. It is being developed with Yamazaki Industry Co., Ltd. and technically coordinated by Kikuchi Seiki Co., Ltd.

Alternō plans to publicly showcase the Mini model at the Tokyo ENEX 2026 exhibition, with live demonstrations for both domestic and international visitors.

Strengthening Japan’s industrial supply chain

Alternō’s operations in Japan are supported by a network of engineering and production partners. Kikuchi Seiki will provide precision engineering expertise, while Yamazaki Industry will handle prototype manufacturing. This partnership aims to accelerate product certification, reduce costs through local component sourcing, and align with Japanese industrial standards.

The initiative also benefits from the backing of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and Tsukuba City, as part of a broader effort to develop a clean heat manufacturing ecosystem.

Support from regional and international investors

Alternō’s expansion into Japan is backed by several Asian ecosystem actors, including ADB Ventures, UntroD Capital, JICA, Leave a Nest, P4G and NTT East. Investors view this technology as a practical solution for decarbonising industrial sectors that rely on high, stable heat.

Recently named Deep Tech Venture of the Year 2025, the company is pursuing regional deployment by combining technological innovation with local industrial know-how.
