In Africa, on the sidelines of the COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, 9 projects will be financed by EDP.

Annual funding

In Africa, Mozambique, Nigeria, Angola and Malawi will benefit from EDP Renewables financing. Thus, €1 million, guaranteed by the A2E (Access to Energy) Fund, will directly or indirectly benefit more than one million people. The Fund aims to make an impact in areas such as health, agriculture, education and access to clean water.

The use of decentralized solar energy and energy storage technologies is the basis of all projects. The 9 projects selected out of 158 are part of the fourth edition of the A2E Fund. Among these projects, there is also a system of solar capsules that provides energy to maternity hospitals.

Vera Pinto Pereira, a member of EDP’s executive board and head of the group’s global social impact strategy, says:

“Access to electricity is essential to ensure the security and development of every community – especially the most remote and vulnerable in sub-Saharan Africa. Our commitment, reinforced today by the financing of nine additional projects, is to continue to facilitate access to clean, safe and low-cost energy in these communities, and thus promote energy inclusion. The positive impact EDP aims to make is measured in every life change we help bring about. Whether it’s a child who can now study at home at night because of lighting, a doctor or nurse who now has emergency equipment to assist with births and surgeries, or a vendor who can keep her fresh produce in the market longer and thus increase the family income.”

Nigeria and Mozambique are once again the countries with the most proposals selected by the A2E Fund. For Nigeria, the selected sponsors are We Care Solar, Konexa, Reeddi and Optimal Greening Foundation.

Multiple projects

In Mozambique, the selected entities are Educafrica, ADPP Mozambique and Fundação Energia sin Fronteras. Fundação Cuerama is the promoter also selected for Angola. Finally aQysta will intervene in Malawi.

With this fourth edition of the A2E Fund, EDP continues the program started in 2018. In the three previous editions, the fund provided a total of $1.5 million to support 20 projects in seven African countries. The countries were Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania.

Together, these projects in Africa improved the lives of 80,000 people. This new edition of the A2E Fund should directly benefit more than 40,000 people. Moreover, indirectly, these actions would affect more than 900,000 people.
