Van Oord, a Dutch company specializing in offshore projects, has been commissioned by Spanish energy giant Iberdrola to develop the Windanker wind farm. Located in the Baltic Sea, this project will have an installed capacity of 300 MW. The Windanker wind farm is part of Germany’s ambitious plan to reach 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.

Project technical details

The project includes the transport and installation of 21 XL monopiles and transition pieces, as well as the design, supply and installation of the inter-array cable network. Van Oord will use its heavy-lift vessel Svanen, specially adapted for the harsh conditions of the Baltic Sea, to install the monopiles. The vessel will be upgraded to handle the next generation of monopile foundations for offshore wind projects.

Expertise and innovation

Van Oord has demonstrated its expertise in offshore wind projects in the Baltic Sea with previous projects such as Baltic 2, Arkona, Kriegers Flak and Baltic Eagle. The Nexus vessel will be deployed to install the inter-array cables, which will span a total length of 29 kilometers. The Dig-It trenching system buries cables at the required depth.

Impact on the energy transition

The Windanker wind farm is scheduled for commissioning in 2026. This project will make a significant contribution to Germany’s renewable energy objectives, increasing offshore wind capacity and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The project also highlights the importance of international partnerships in achieving global climate goals.
The partnership between Van Oord and Iberdrola for the Windanker offshore wind farm is an outstanding example of strategic collaboration in the renewable energy sector. This project will not only contribute to Germany’s energy objectives, but will also strengthen Van Oord’s position as a leader in the energy transition.
