Uniper and Vesta are launching a cooperation in the Netherlands to develop a green ammonia hub in Northwest Europe. This is an important step that confirms Uniper’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2035. Moreover, in the context of the energy crisis, this agreement strengthens the European Union’s security of supply.
Successful cooperation between Uniper and Vesta
Uniper and Vesta sign a memorandum of understanding in the Netherlands to renovate and expand an existing storage facility in Vlissingen. The German energy company and the Dutch company intend to create a green ammonia hub in Greenpoint Valley. In addition, Uniper wants to reserve capacity in the terminal for ammonia and hydrogen activities.
The German company is thus banking on the development of the green ammonia and hydrogen markets. At the same time, Uniper is building Germany’s first LNG import terminal in Wilhelmshaven. The company is also developing a green ammonia import terminal.
Extendthe flow capacity
Vesta Terminals in Vlissingen currently has a refrigerated storage capacity of 60,000 m³ for ammonia. The future project plans to handle an initial flow capacity of 0.96 mtpa, rising to 1.92 mtpa in the second phase. 2026 will be the year of implementation of the various operations.
Andreas Gemballa, Director of LNG and Global Energy Trading at Uniper, is delighted with this prospect:
“We are proud to have taken another step towards establishing a maritime green hydrogen product portfolio at Uniper. With access to the future Vesta terminal, we will be able to supply our growing European customer base with green ammonia and hydrogen products.”
Uniper intends to be able to supply its customers not only with green ammonia, but also with hydrogen.
