State Grid Wuzhong Power Supply Company has recently completed the installation and acceptance procedures for the energy storage compartment at the Juneng Sunjiatan site of the 330-kilovolt Tongli substation in Wuzhong, Ningxia Autonomous Region. This project paves the way for the future connection of a 300-megawatt, 600-megawatt-hour shared energy storage power station to the local grid, supporting the development of the energy sector in western China, PRNewswire reported on June 30.

Technical optimisation and site adaptation

The expansion of the storage compartment at Tongli substation required managing several constraints, including high density of existing equipment and limited space for new infrastructure. To address these challenges, a specialised technical team was formed within the company. This group conducted an in-depth analysis of the expansion plan and carried out comprehensive simulations of grid operations, leading to the development of a detailed construction plan and adapted safety measures.

Work was carried out in strict compliance with established operational protocols. On-site teams accelerated the pace of construction while maintaining high quality standards, ensuring the rapid and safe commissioning of the compartment. The completion of installation, commissioning, and testing of the new equipment now enables Tongli substation to be ready for large-scale energy storage.

Network reinforcement and industry outlook

With the completion of this compartment, State Grid Wuzhong Power Supply Company plans to continue optimising the regional grid structure. The company is also committed to improving intelligent grid construction and strengthening the safety, reliability, and flexibility of local grid operations. According to official statements relayed by PRNewswire, these initiatives are designed to support the growing energy demand in Ningxia’s economic and social sectors.

This development is part of a broader trend of enhancing energy storage capabilities on the Chinese grid. The upcoming 300-megawatt shared storage power plant will bring additional capacity to the local power system, enabling better management of variable renewable energy production and an increased response to peak demand.

The success of this project demonstrates the ability of regional operators to meet growing flexibility needs on the network. A representative of State Grid Wuzhong Power Supply Company stated that “the quality of execution and the rigour of technical protocols help to secure regional energy supply,” according to PRNewswire on June 30.
