RWE Supply & Trading and Ocean Breeze Energy recently signed a green power purchase agreement for the BARD Offshore 1 wind farm. The partnership will allow RWE to market the wind farm’s electricity production under a direct marketing scheme from April 2023.

German offshore wind farm: a pioneer in the climate energy transition

By 2026, wind turbines will be phased into a fixed price regime through 2030. The wind farm, located 100 km off the German North Sea coast, has 80 wind turbines with a capacity of 400 MW, enough to meet the electricity needs of about 463,000 households.

Ocean Breeze Energy, a pioneer in the German offshore industry, commissioned the BARD Offshore 1 wind farm in 2013. The electricity from the wind farm will be used in the future to produce green hydrogen via RWE’s electrolyser projects, as well as to supply green electricity to RWE Supply & Trading customers. This partnership will contribute to the climate energy transition of various industries and the transportation sector.

Ocean Breeze Energy and RWE: a partnership for energy flexibility

Jean Huby, CEO of Ocean Breeze Energy, said the agreement guarantees an exit for their power generation in the long term. They are proud to partner with RWE to contribute to the necessary transformation of European energy systems towards carbon neutrality. Meanwhile, Ulf Kerstin, CCO of RWE Supply & Trading, sees the collaboration as another crucial step in growing the company’s green energy portfolio. By integrating the wind farm into their portfolio, they are responding to their customers’ growing demand for green energy and strengthening RWE’s green hydrogen business.

In addition to this partnership, the two companies plan to collaborate in other areas. For example, RWE Supply & Trading plans to use the wind farm to provide flexibility in the form of regulation energy to stabilize the power grid. This will compensate for short-term fluctuations in the network.

In sum, the partnership between RWE Supply & Trading and Ocean Breeze Energy is an important development towards a climate energy transition.
