The Government of Quebec has allocated more than $1.3 million to the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles to support a continuing education program in wind turbine maintenance. This funding is supplemented by an institutional contribution of $203,263 from the Cégep itself. The objective is to provide an educational response tailored to the growing need for technical labor in this segment of the industry.
This project is part of the Évolution-Compétences program, through the Partnership for Training and Innovation component, under the coordination of the Commission des partenaires du marché du travail (Quebec Labor Market Partners Commission). Sectoral forecasts estimate that 400 additional technicians will be required by 2029, notably linked to the commissioning of new wind farms announced in the province.
A mobile solution for remote regions
The funding enabled the creation of a mobile training unit equipped with technical material specific to wind turbine maintenance. This mobile laboratory allows trainers to travel to different regions and work directly with communities, local businesses, or areas lacking traditional training infrastructure.
The device was designed to facilitate access to training, reduce logistical constraints, and provide flexible and targeted learning. It is intended both for individuals already employed in the sector and for those wishing to enter this developing market.
Implementation focused on local needs
The program is accessible through several channels: via employers for active workers, through community project proposals, or on individual initiative. The chosen model aims to align training capacity with labor market needs, particularly in areas remote from Gaspé.
Since May 2025, eight students from the Mi’kmaq communities of Listuguj, Gesgapegiag, and Gespeg have joined the program. In June 2025, the initiative received Nergica’s Workforce Development Award at the Renewable Energy Recognition Gala held in Beaupré.
