Norway is ready to deliver record volumes of gas to Europe. In fact, the Norwegian export system is at the top of the list for supply. The country is committed to sending large quantities of gas in the coming years.
Norway overtakes Russia
This year, the Nordic country has become the largest supplier of gas to Europe, surpassing Russia. It acquired this status long before Nord Stream 1 was shut down. Last week, Gazprom announced the closure of the pipeline for an indefinite period. The pipeline operated by the Russian company has historically supplied about one third of the gas transported from Russia to Europe.
The current context shows that the question of gas supply remains a European issue. This allows Gassco to acquire a place of choice among gas suppliers.
In order to maintain regular flows, the Norwegian company has postponed its summer maintenance. Noting the unusual situation that characterizes the events, Frode Leversund, CEO of Gassco says:
“We delivered this summer what we usually deliver in the winter.”
The maintenance period is scheduled for September. As a result, flows will be reduced. Nevertheless, the system should be operational by October.
Gassco is responsible for transporting gas from the Norwegian plateau to Europe. It supplies Great Britain, Germany, Belgium and France by pipeline. Shipments have increased significantly this year. These amount to 60 TWh, or 4.97 billion m3 of gas.
Gas deliveries assured
Norway expects record exports. In this sense, it expects 117 billion m3 of gas delivered by pipeline in 2022 against 113.2 billion m3 the previous year. These figures help to secure and guarantee supply in Europe. This one having been put in danger these last months.
In addition, exports will be facilitated by the new gas pipeline linking Norway and Poland. The latter, called Baltic Pipe, is expected to enter service in October. In addition, it could increase Gassco’s overall capabilities.
The Nordic country could see its gas production increase by 8% this year, reaching 122 billion m3.
