Montante Solar has selected Castillo Engineering to provide engineering and design services for two landfill solar projects led by Calibrant Energy in Niagara, New York. These installations, with a combined capacity of 13 MW, align with the growing trend of repurposing closed sites for electricity generation.
Rapid Growth of Landfill Solar
In the United States, landfill solar projects have grown by 80% over the past five years. The states of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Jersey currently account for more than 70% of all landfill solar capacity, with a total estimated output of 2.4 GW. With approximately 10,000 closed landfills across the country, this segment has significant expansion potential.
A Project Designed for Complex Terrain
The Niagara installations utilize fixed-tilt ballast mounting technology, a solution suited for the sensitive soil conditions of closed landfills. According to Montante Solar, Castillo Engineering’s multidisciplinary expertise—spanning civil, electrical, and structural engineering—has helped optimize site development while ensuring the protection of landfill capping systems.
New York, a Leader in Community Solar
Beyond supplying power to the grid, these new facilities strengthen New York’s position as the leading state in installed community solar capacity. They also contribute to the state’s energy goals, which include achieving 70% renewable electricity by 2030 and a fully zero-emission grid by 2040.
