Globeleq, Africa’s leading independent power company, concludes proceedings for 6 solar projects.
A major player in Africa
Globeleq obtains legal approval for six solar projects of 75MWac each. These projects cement the presence on the African continent of a major energy player. The South African company is the majority partner of the Ikamva consortium.
The company currently produces 1500GW across 14 facilities in 6 countries, with 722MW of projects under construction. In addition, the company is planning 2000MW of facilities under development. Recently, the fifth bidding round of the Independent Renewable Energy Supply Program closed.
Ambitions for the future
With the legal formalization, the company ensures the continuity of several of its flagship projects. The construction of the 6 solar projects should start in 2023, and the production in 2025. Mike Scholey, CEO of Globeleq says:
“Africa’s solar potential is huge and we commend the South African government for the efforts made in the green transition. The goal is to provide clean and stable electricity to the grid by supporting decarbonization efforts.”
The six sites of 75MWac each awarded to the energy giant are located in the Free State province. This will make it the largest renewable energy investment in the region. Finally, this project will create approximately 1,800 jobs for two years and avoid the emission of 1,350,000 tons of CO2.
