The EU’ s energy platform is preparing to launch its first call for gas procurement applications on April 25. This initiative, which operates through its AggregateEU service, is an important step in preparing for the upcoming winter season and filling gas reserves. Interested companies from EU member states and Energy Community contracting countries must finalize their registration with PRISMA, the service provider, and subscribe to the AggregateEU service by April 20 in order to participate.

The submitted gas demand will be aggregated and matched with vendor bids through a competitive bidding process. Each round of bidding, which will take place every two months for the next 12 months, will last approximately two weeks. Companies must specify both the type of delivery, i.e. liquefied natural gas(LNG) or national balance point, and the date when they submit their gas request.

Benefits and opportunities for industry and households

According to Vice President Maroš Šefčovič, who heads the EU Energy Platform, the initiative offers an opportunity to secure stable gas supplies at lower prices, especially for smaller entities, by reaching new markets and suppliers. Assistance from “central buyers” or “agents on behalf” will provide support in the negotiation and transportation of gas supplies.

Although company participation in gas procurement is voluntary, EU member states must ensure that local companies apply for the equivalent of 15% of each member state’s gas reserve filling obligations, as defined in the gas storage regulations. This requirement is intended to balance energy supply and demand and avoid any potential gas shortages.
