The DemoSATH project has successfully installed an innovative 2 MW floating wind platform offshore. The Windstaller Alliance used the Normand Sapphire to tow DemoSATH from the port of Bilbao to BiMEP. The mooring lines are connected to the turret. Work continues on the dynamic and static cables to export the energy. DemoSATH aims to supply the equivalent of 2,000 Spanish homes a year.
DemoSATH successfully deployed in the open sea
The success of the floating installation marks a major step forward in the project’s mission to harness wind power and generate sustainable electricity. David Carrascosa, Director of Operations at Saitec Offshore Technologies, emphasizes that this milestone validates constant commitment, resilience and teamwork. The challenges overcome will serve as valuable lessons for future projects. The team is proud of its achievements and the combined efforts of its employees.
Support and potential of floating wind turbines
For Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind, the installation of DemoSATH offshore is an important step towards the commissioning of RWE’s second floating demonstration project. The lessons learned from these demonstration projects call for future large-scale projects:
“The offshore installation of the DemoSATH project marks an important milestone on the road to commissioning RWE’s second floating demonstration project. We see great potential for floating wind farms worldwide, as they open up opportunities in countries with deeper coastal waters. As a pioneer in the floating field, the first-hand lessons learned from our demonstration projects are essential for optimizing our future large-scale projects and ensuring their safe delivery.”
Objectives of the Operational Period
For two years at BiMEP, Saitec Offshore Technologies will be testing SATH technology. Operating and maintenance requirements will be analyzed. The project aims to provide a better understanding of meteorological challenges in open seas. This project particularly concerns the Cantabrian Sea. In the long term, data collection should provide more in-depth knowledge of the platform’s coexistence with the environment and maritime activities.
Collaboration and Environmental Impact
The DemoSATH project draws on the engineering design expertise of Saitec Offshore Technologies, as well as the experience of RWE and Kansai Electric Power. The contribution of other companies and the support of the CDTI and the Basque government guarantee success. After installation, the project moves on to commissioning and power generation.
