Chinese manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) unveiled its new TENER Stack energy storage solution at the Smarter E South America 2025 exhibition in São Paulo. It was the group’s first participation in this event, the largest in the sector in South America. This launch marks a strategic step in CATL’s expansion into a fast-growing market with increasing demand for grid flexibility.

A modular system designed for regional constraints

The TENER Stack offers a 9MWh capacity in a stackable format, compatible with the different cell technologies developed by CATL. The system is presented as capable of operating without degradation for five years or withstanding extreme temperatures, depending on the type of cell used. It was engineered to meet the diverse climatic conditions of South America, including tropical areas and remote regions.

Brazil in particular shows significant development potential. BloombergNEF estimates that the country will require more than $6tn in energy investments by 2050 to meet its climate goals. This trend increases the need for large-scale storage solutions capable of supporting the integration of renewable energy sources into the national grid.

Logistical optimisation and operational efficiency

The system reduces by 45% the number of containers needed to build an 800MWh site compared with 5MWh solutions. It also delivers 50% higher energy density than standard 20-foot models while occupying 45% less floor space. Its weight of under 36 tonnes makes it compliant with transport regulations in nearly all global markets, while cutting logistical costs by up to 35%.

Its design incorporates lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, gas sensors 40% more sensitive, and reinforced insulation providing up to two hours of fire resistance. The system also meets IEEE693 seismic standards, withstanding category 9 earthquakes and category 5 hurricanes under established benchmarks.

Strengthening industrial presence in South America

CATL had already established a presence in Brazil in 2022 through the Registro Energy Storage Project, regarded as the first utility-scale storage site in the country. The project reached a new milestone this year with the expansion of its first station, confirming the group’s progress in the local market.

The company also plans to expand operations across the continent. Local teams are being formed in Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. A new regional office will be inaugurated in Chile in September to provide closer technical and commercial support to clients in the region.

In addition to the TENER Stack, CATL’s portfolio includes the EnerOne+ and TENER systems, designed for off-grid, commercial and utility-scale projects. These solutions are built to operate in temperatures ranging from -35°C to 55°C and include a humidity reduction system for high-moisture environments. They are configured to require minimal maintenance, including in remote installations.
