The Babilônia Centro wind farm, located in Bahia, has reached a significant milestone with the commercial production of its first turbines. The project, developed by Casa dos Ventos, a leading renewable energy player in Brazil, and ArcelorMittal Brasil, the country’s steel production leader, currently includes 28 out of the 123 turbines planned. This 13-week advancement from the original timeline was approved in January by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL).
Casa dos Ventos’ expertise in project management
This development highlights Casa dos Ventos’ expertise in managing renewable energy projects, characterised by careful planning and close cooperation with suppliers. According to Lucas Araripe, CEO of Casa dos Ventos, “the early operation demonstrates our ongoing pursuit of efficiency and our commitment to excellence, further consolidating our leadership position in Brazil’s renewable energy market.”
ArcelorMittal’s commitment to decarbonisation
ArcelorMittal Brasil, on its part, strengthens its commitment to decarbonisation with this project. The company, a pioneer in the field, has set a global goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Jefferson De Paula, President of ArcelorMittal Brasil, emphasised that this project is a key step in the energy transition, adding that investments in energy projects in Brazil have reached BRL5.8bn. ArcelorMittal also supplied XCarb low-carbon steel for the construction of the turbine foundations.
Economic and social impacts of the project
A total of more than 1,400 workers were involved during the construction phase, generating over 4,500 direct and indirect jobs. The Babilônia Centro wind farm also plans to add a solar power plant, increasing the total capacity to 800 MW once completed. This hybrid project will optimise energy production while enhancing the efficiency of the energy distribution system.
