Canadian company Anaergia Inc., through its Italy-based subsidiary Anaergia S.r.l., has entered into an agreement with Nortegas Renovables, a subsidiary of Spanish group Nortegas, to construct an anaerobic digestion facility in southern Spain. The contract is valued at $13.23mn, according to an official company statement.
Work on the project begins this month. The facility, designed to convert organic agricultural waste into biomethane, is expected to be completed within two years. Once operational, the plant will inject renewable gas into the local network in line with Spanish market standards.
A project rooted in the regional agricultural economy
The facility will be located in Andalusia, a key agricultural region, ensuring a steady supply of organic feedstock. Anaergia will oversee the full technical development chain, from engineering to process installation. The technology deployed is based on proprietary solutions already used elsewhere in Europe, although the expected annual biomethane output has not been disclosed.
For Nortegas Renovables, the investment supports its broader strategy of diversifying gas sources by recovering local waste streams. The group continues to expand its renewable energy activities through partnerships with international technology providers.
Commercial expansion and industrial cooperation
This contract marks the first collaboration between Anaergia and Nortegas Renovables in Spain. Nortegas Renovables General Director, Felipe Requejo Sigüenza, stated that the facility “demonstrates the company’s commitment to developing accessible renewable gas.” Anaergia Chief Executive Officer, Assaf Onn, highlighted the strategic importance of the Iberian market for the company.
No further announcements have been made regarding future developments, although both companies expressed an interest in continuing their collaboration. No information has been provided regarding subsidies or associated public financing.
