Air Liquide in partnership with Rusatom Overseas presents its new project for a hydrogen production unit on Sakhalin Island.
The future production unit will produce low-carbon hydrogen on the Russian island of Sakhalin.
Rusatom and Air Liquide have announced that their studies have been conclusive, and they are now considering the architecture of the future site.
The French industrial group has been studying the possibility of locating on Sakhalin since April 2021.
On that date, it signed a partnership agreement with Rusatom Overseas.
In addition, the steam-reforming production site will be coupled with a carbon storage unit.

“The project to produce low-carbon hydrogen on Sakhalin Island (…) using green technology to capture CO2 is developing successfully,” says Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko.

Locally, the Sakhalin authorities are backing the project financially, as Governor Limarenko testifies.
For the Sakhalin authorities, the challenge is to provide their isolated region with a reliable source of energy and jobs.
For Air Liquide and Rusatom, on the other hand, the island of Sakhalin represents a natural outlet to a very promising Asian market.
As local production is too low, many Asian companies are turning to Russia for their hydrogen imports.
As Evgeny Pakermanov, President of Rusatom Overseas JSC, confirms,

“We are already in negotiations with potential partners in Japan and South Korea to launch a low-carbon hydrogen supply chain by 2025”.

In association with Rusatom, Air Liquide is thus further establishing itself as a major player in the hydrogen sector.
