ACWA Power acquires the development of Central Asia’s largest wind farm in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan.
1500 MW of wind power from an agreement between the Saudi and Uzbek governments and ACWA Power to meet Uzbek targets for 2030.
ACWA Power prepares Central Asia’s largest wind farm
The Saudi and Uzbek governments and the AWCA Power Group have just signed an agreement.
The agreement will see the construction of a 1,500 MW wind farm in Uzbekistan’s Karakalpakstan province.
Once operational, it will be the largest in Central Asia and one of the largest in the world.
The project is expected to meet the energy needs of around 4 million households.
It will meet the growing demand for electricity in Uzbekistan in an efficient and sustainable way.
The park will prevent the emission of 2.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
25% of Uzbekistan’s energy mix from renewable sources by 2030
Through this collaboration with ACWA Power, the Uzbek government is diversifying its energy mix and increasing its renewable energy capacity.
A power purchase agreement (PPA) for two wind power projects with a total capacity of 1,000 MW was also recently signed.
Masdar announced its intention to develop 1.5 GW of wind power in the country by 2024.
Other renewable energy projects under development
All this will contribute to Uzbekistan’s goal of generating 25% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
The development, construction and operation of this wind farm will be carried out by the Saudi company ACWA Power.
The Group is also involved in the construction of a 1,500 MW gas-fired power project in Sirdarya.
These examples reflect Saudi Arabia’s leadership in the field of renewable energies in Central Asia.
