In Belfort, a Gigafactory of electrolyzers is the subject of an investment announcement made by the Board of Directors of McPhy.

A major project

The Gigafactory, announced for the Belfort site in France, will be commissioned in the first half of 2024. It is an industrial facility dedicated to electrolysers without equivalent in Europe. The gradual ramp-up will allow us to reach an annual production capacity of 1GW.

This announcement of the Gigafactory precedes the signing of a public aid contract with Bpifrance. This amounts to a maximum of €114 million, with a first payment of €28.5 million. Subsequent payments will be in the form of reimbursements for expenses incurred under the terms of the contract.

McPhy plans to increase its research and development resources and strengthen its project and service teams. In addition, the start of construction and the purchase of the land will require a Gigafactory-related cash outlay of €9 million.

A European objective

This will give the company a total annual production capacity of 1.3GW. The company wants to offer large-scale production to meet the needs of the European market. This project will enable it to contribute to the decarbonization of industry, mobility and energy.

McPhy highlights the collaboration with the numerous partners of the Hydrogen ecosystem in Europe. These collaborations are set up for research and development in this Gigafactory located at the crossroads of European countries. Initially, the company aims to develop new generation alkaline electrolyzers.

The future Gigafactory in Belfort will host the production of the “Augmented McLyzer” range of large electrolysers. This new technology allows to equip architectures from 20 to 100MW and beyond with an output pressure of 30 bars. Thus, it will equip the industry with devices capable of producing hydrogen from renewable energies at a competitive cost.
