Teesworks Ltd has signed an agreement with Energy Optimisation Solutions (EOS) to develop a battery energy storage (BESS) site on Teesside. EOS ‘ investment of 62 million euros is aimed at establishing a system capable of supplying up to 100 MW of additional energy to the grid. This project is part of Teesworks’ strategy to strengthen its position in the renewable energies and storage sector, following in the footsteps of GE Renewable Energy’s wind power project.

Project features

The three-acre site will be located in the Long Acres section of the Teesworks complex. The storage system will regulate the energy generated by renewable sources to optimize distribution according to demand. This infrastructure will play a crucial role in stabilizing energy supply.

Economic impact and employment

Construction of the facility is expected to take around 12 months, creating over 100 construction jobs. Once operational, the facility will boost the region’s energy storage capacity, contributing to the resilience of the local and national power grid.

Outlook for Teesworks

This project complements existing initiatives at the Teesworks site, including the HyGreen Teesside and H2 Teesside hydrogen production facilities, as well as the Net Zero Teesside carbon capture and storage project. These developments testify to Teesworks’ dynamic approach to energy innovation and its contribution to modernizing the UK energy landscape.

Management declarations

Chris Musgrave, Chairman of Teesworks Limited, commented, “This agreement with EOS marks a significant step forward in our mission to make Teesworks a leading hub for energy storage technologies.” Peter Walker, Director of EOS, added: “Teesworks offers an ideal environment for our new storage facility thanks to its infrastructure and numerous renewable energy projects.”

Future development and planning

The building permit application is currently being finalized by EOS. With favorable planning, the commissioning of the storage facility could boost the UK’s energy capacity. EOS is also pursuing other projects in the UK, including a 230 MW facility in Newport, Wales.
